If you went to the Holiday Treat last December, then you most likely saw Kelly Shen singing Christmas songs like “Deck the Halls” to 16th century choir classics like “Coventry Carol.” Kelly has been practicing choir for 6 years, with a well-decorated history of singing experiences. She played the lead role of Mulan in her middle school play, participated in the California All State Honor Choir, and has sung many songs for our SHP Masses. She additionally represents what it means to be well-rounded: besides choir, she is the competition organizer for robotics, the History Club co-leader, and the freshman treasurer/secretary.
Arguably more important, however, is her bold, caring, and inspiring personality- she’s exactly the person you’d want to hang around with. People know her to be a “knowledgeable, kind, funny, and inspiring singer… a great teammate, but a better friend,” and someone who “always knows what to do.” For all these aspects, the Heartbeat is proud to honor Kelly Shen as this publication’s Artist of the Issue.
I’ve asked Kelly a few questions regarding choir, and here’s what she had to say:
Q: What part of choir appeals to you the most?
A: I really love the harmonies. When I hear the different voice parts blending together, it gives me chills. Especially when it’s a really beautiful piece.
Q: What inspires you in choir?
A: Seeing all of my extremely talented classmates. They push me to learn my music better or work harder, because I feel like I need to keep up with them. I learn something new from them every day.
Q: What are your future goals regarding choir?
A: I hope that by the end of the year I can hold my part consistently and accurately. For me, it’s a little difficult trying to sing harmony, and I aim to improve and hone in on this particular aspect of choir.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering choir?
A: Honestly, go for it! Choir is such a fun class – I’ve never heard of anyone regretting their decision to join. I’ve made new friends through choir, learned new and awesome music, and performed at Chili Cook Off and Holiday treat, two events I enjoy. If you join, you’ll get to share the fun too!
Be sure to watch Kelly singing at various SHP events in the future!
